The surf definitely caught some people off guard yesterday. The slow inconsistent start of the swell allured surfers into the line-ups and the first 12 foot set came around 9am at Pipe but other spots were already crankings. The waves were pretty sparse at Pipeline. The sandbar and dab of north in the swell was making most of the waves shut down or double and triple up into Ehukai. By midday it started to clean up a little bit but then it got a little too big for Pipe with most of the waves just washing through the lineup. Some pros were out trying to practice for the Pipemasters which starts on the 8th, but there were not too many good waves and they were having to duck under the close outs and surf the inbetween waves. I didn't watch Sunset where they were having the Oneil Pro, but I am sure it was a similar situation of having to dodge the sets that were maxing out the break and find some inbetween waves. Word had it that the Bay was kindof missing the swell, but I saw a clip from Hess Images and it looked like there were a few, fun kind Waimea waves. Yesterdays 15 ft bomber sets were long gone this morning which is just about 4-6 but all the pros were out at Pipe with a very intense vibe that everyone wanted to beat everybody. The waves were a little weird but there was still some great surfing going on. Shaper Wade Tokoro scored the best wave of the morning both yesterday and today. I think he may be making some of his teamriders a little jealous. ha ha. Looks like the buoys are already coming back for tomorrows swell so it should pick back up tonight.
